Dementia Training Your Facility Has to Document

Massachusetts requires long-term care facilities and assisted living residences to give direct care staff dementia-specific training, keep records of it, and repeat it every year. Surveyors can ask to see those records.

One Health and Beyond delivers Alzheimer's and dementia care seminars for nursing homes, assisted living residences, dementia special care units, adult day programs, group homes and home care agencies across Massachusetts. We come to your building, work around your shift schedule, and train your team together.

The seminars are practical and interactive. Staff leave knowing how to communicate with a resident who is confused, how to respond when behavior escalates, and how to support daily care in a way that protects dignity and reduces incidents.

We keep the cost low so smaller facilities and community programs can meet their training requirements without stretching the budget.

Massachusetts Dementia Training Requirements

Requirements differ by setting and by role. This summary is a starting point for planning your training calendar. Always confirm the current rule that applies to your license with your staff development coordinator.

SettingWho Must Be TrainedTraining Expected
Nursing homes and long-term care facilitiesDirect care workers, therapeutic activity directors and their supervisorsDementia-specific initial training during orientation, then ongoing training every year, under 105 CMR 150.024 and 150.025
Dementia special care unitsAll relevant staff assigned to the unitThe same initial and annual dementia training, with the unit held to additional standards for care, activities and physical design
Assisted living residencesAll staff with direct resident contactOrientation hours that include time devoted to dementia care and cognitive impairment, with extra hours for residence managers and service coordinators, under 651 CMR 12.07
Adult day programs, group homes and home care agenciesDirect care and program staffNo single statewide hour count. Most programs set an internal standard and document dementia training for staff who support residents with cognitive impairment

What the training itself has to look like. Massachusetts expects dementia training to cover the foundations of dementia and dementia care, be at least partly interactive, suit the population your facility serves, reflect current best practice, and include an evaluation that each staff member takes and passes. Our seminars are built around those points, and your facility keeps the documentation.

What the Seminar Covers

Content is adjusted to your setting and the roles in the room, so a memory care team and a dining or housekeeping team do not sit through the same session.

Understanding Dementia

  • Alzheimer's disease and other common types of dementia
  • How the condition progresses and what changes at each stage
  • Normal aging, delirium and dementia, and how they differ
  • What the resident is actually experiencing

Communication Skills

  • Approaching a resident who is confused or frightened
  • Simple language, tone, pace and body position
  • Responding when the resident is in a different reality
  • Avoiding arguments, corrections and quizzing

Behavior and Safety

  • Reading behavior as a message about an unmet need
  • Agitation, resistance to care and repeated questions
  • Sundowning, wandering and exit seeking
  • Falls, choking and other common safety risks

Daily Care and Dignity

  • Bathing, dressing and toileting without a struggle
  • Eating, hydration and weight loss warning signs
  • Meaningful activities through the day
  • Working with families and supporting staff wellbeing

Seminar Formats

Choose the format that fits your staffing and your training calendar. All formats can be repeated across shifts so no one misses the session.

On-Site at Your Facility

We bring the seminar to your building, so staff do not travel and shifts stay covered. Best for training a full team at once.

New Staff Orientation Session

A longer session for newly hired direct care staff who need dementia training during their orientation period.

Annual Refresher

A shorter yearly session that keeps your team current and gives you the documentation your annual requirement calls for.

Contact us for seminar length, group size and scheduling for your facility.

Why Facilities Choose One Health and Beyond

We are a healthcare training center in Stoughton, MA. Our students are the same people your facility hires: home health aides, direct care staff and medication-certified workers. We know what a shift actually looks like, so the training is practical rather than theoretical.

Seminars are led by the team at One Health and Beyond, founded by Jocelyne Destine, FNP-C, PMHP-C, DNP, a nurse practitioner and educator with more than ten years of clinical and teaching experience. Learn more about our founder.

Many facilities book dementia training alongside other staff needs. We also deliver MAP certification for medication administration and CPR and First Aid certification for your team, and we train new hires through our Home Health Aide program.

FAQs

Does Massachusetts require dementia training for facility staff?

Yes. Long-term care facilities must provide dementia-specific training to direct care workers, activity directors and their supervisors, both at orientation and every year, under 105 CMR 150.024 and 150.025. Assisted living residences have their own orientation requirements under 651 CMR 12.07. Confirm the current rule for your license before you plan your calendar.

Will this seminar satisfy our training requirement?

The seminar is built around what the regulation asks for: foundations of dementia care, interactive delivery, content suited to your population, current best practice and an evaluation each attendee takes. Your staff development coordinator makes the final call on whether it meets your facility's plan, so we are happy to share the outline in advance.

Do you come to our facility?

Yes. On-site delivery is the most common choice because staff do not have to travel and shifts stay covered. Training at our Stoughton center is also available.

Can you train across multiple shifts?

Yes. We repeat the session for day, evening and weekend staff so no one is left out of the training record.

How many staff can attend?

Group size depends on your space and the format you choose. Contact us with your headcount and we will plan the sessions.

Do you provide documentation for surveyors?

We provide an attendance record and a completed evaluation for each attendee. Your facility keeps these in its training file.

Is the seminar only for memory care staff?

No. Dining, housekeeping, activities and front desk teams interact with residents who have dementia every day, and facilities often include them. We adjust the content for non-clinical roles.

Can families attend?

Yes. We hold community sessions for family caregivers. Ask about upcoming dates.

Do you offer other staff training?

Yes. We also deliver MAP certification, CPR and First Aid certification and Home Health Aide training for new hires.
